Idea

The brief:

Before starting this project I had already identified that my weakness is within my production in particular my cinematography. My understanding the brief is to create a multi camera TV show that lasts no longer than five minutes. I noticed the brief highlighted the importance of research within this project in particular watching and analysing similar TV to your idea. I think this is because the of multiple camera may become more challenging than most people originally assumed. After reading the brief I felt I had a good understanding what was required of my work and I already had some ideas on what I was going to create.

My Initial Ideas:

Idea One:

My first idea is to do a game show inspired by Task Master I personally really enjoy this show and think I would have fun creating this. I would give three people a creative activity and film them doing it and their end result. This would be a light-hearted competition game show. After my last few projects have been quite serious I would really love to create a piece of media that could make people laugh. In order to create this show I would have to make a creative and fun activity which could be hard. A definite positive about this idea is that I would easily be able to film this within the government guidelines surrounding Corona Virus. This is because only one person would be filmed at once and the crew could easily stand 2 meters apart while filming.

Idea Two:

My second idea is to film a performance. Either dance or a musical theatre performance and make it appear as a segment of a talk show or a live performance. I think this would be an unique piece. A positive from this idea is that I wouldn't have to concentrate on a script or screen play this would allow me to focus on my cinematography which has been a weak point in my previous projects. Another positive is that I would easily be able to shoot this within the government guidelines surrounding corona virus. This would also help a musical theatre student as they are constantly looking for new ways to show case their work.

Idea Three:

My third idea is to have a cooking show my shows concept would be to teach people healthy recipes that they can easily make at home. I defiantly feel there is an audience for this show as I know many people who can not cook also promoting healthy eating to the public is very important to the NHS. Although I like this idea I feel it would be very difficult to organise and film while under the corona virus restrictions.

My Idea:

After consideration I have decided to do idea two this idea excited me as I thought it was quite unique and unlike any project I've done before. I also think idea two would help me the most to improve my cinematography whereas the other two I feel would not particularly help. Idea two would also be safe to do under the current restrictions whereas I feel idea three would be difficult to maintain social distancing. My second idea also means I could help promote someone in the musical theatre department however the success of my project relies heavily on the commitment of who ever I film, which means I should consider my choices carefully.

My Plan:

My idea is to record a live duet from two musical theatre students. I chose this idea as it would allow me to have more time to concentrate on my cinematography and sound which are both areas that I have discovered from previous projects are my weak points. I'm hoping this project will allow me to widen my knowledge and skill set within the practical areas of this course. For this project I will research live musical performance from a range of different shows such as talent shows, talk shows and live recordings from festivals. However with the current circumstances concerning lockdown it will be likely that the record will happen over zoom. My main goal for this project is to have a better understanding of practical work so that I can apply this to my future projects.

Proposal:

Rationale:

As previously stated after analysing my past projects I realised that my weakest point was my production I tend to always focus on my pre and post production leaving less time to consider my actual product. Therefore I decided something more physical would be best for this project allowing me to spend more time on how my show sounds and looks. From there I contacted a musical theatre student as I'm aware that the students are very keen on performing their work. I also thought I could easily do this within the Corona virus restrictions as I could easily position both performers two meters apart and then keep the crew two meters apart with masks on. To me this idea appeared perfect not only would it help me with future projects it would also help two musical theatre students while ensuring everyone's safety.

Project Concept:

For this project I will be recording a live duet song by two musical Theatre students Holly and Olivia. I intend to use three cameras to capture this performance along with efficient sound recording equipment to ensure that my cinematography and sound is at it's highest possible quality as these are extremely important when producing a live performance. Because I intend for my focus on this project to be the cinematography I will keep my lighting, location and overall atmosphere simple yet effective, reflecting the musical piece. I will start my piece by introducing Holly and Olivia and it will play similarly as how musical acts are introduced on talk shows.

Proposed Research:

Discovering and understanding the target audience is key for this project so I intend to start my research there. I intend to do an in depth analysis of my potential audience so that I can apply this to my final product. Also to help improve my technical skills I will be researching camera, lighting and sound so I can produce a high quality performance piece. Furthermore I will also research and analyse similar TV programs so that I can understand how to film live performances to a professional level.

Evaluation:

I believe evaluation is extremely important and is key to reflecting and improving for future projects. In order to keep my evaluation in depth and accurate I will keep a detailed diary on my progress from week to week.

Research Strategy:

Target Audience:

To begin my research I will look into target audience using a subjective qualitative technique of using my own opinions to estimate my potential audience. Then to add a more reliable and valid answer I will research the target audience using gaining a quantitative and therefore accurate answer.

Codes and Conventions:

To ground my understanding of the codes and convention I will analyse similar shows to give a subjective opinion. However to have a more reliable answer I will also create a survey and present it to my target audience so I can understand what they enjoy about my subject.

Mise En Scene:

To begin I will use my analysis and the research I have done with codes and conventions to create my own mise en scene idea. Once I have this I will hold a focus group to get the opinions of my ideas and then make any changes I need.

Cinematography:

To build my cinematography skills I will research books and videos to help improve my technical ability and document this journey on my research page. This will mostly be subjective and qualitative data.

  1. Three strong well thought out ideas, you've even outlined how you are going to complete each idea even with the current Covid situation. Clearly outlined what you want to improve on and how the idea you've picked will help do that. You also have a good research strategy which has mapped out your steps going forward to the next stage of the project.
